Dyson’s interest in researching and developing energy storage technologies started more than a decade ago, when it became apparent that the full potential of our DDM motors were starting to be held back by commercially available batteries. Fast-forward to 2021, and we now have over 100 scientists and engineers working on battery R&D across our labs in the UK, US and Singapore.

With multiple generations of Dyson battery technologies ranging from early research through the industrialisation phase, Dyson are recruiting a wide range of roles across their UK and Singapore labs to accelerate progress. These roles include materials scientists, electrochemists, cell design engineers, cell test technicians, cell assembly technicians, mechanical design engineers, manufacturing process development engineers and manufacturing technologists. We are recruiting at all levels of seniority up to senior technical leadership roles.

About the role

You will join a team of material scientists, electrochemists, mechanical and electronic engineers at Dyson’s Malmesbury Research campus. To meet Dyson’s growing energy storage requirements, your focus will be the hands-on development and optimisation of manufacturing processes for materials and components for cells and batteries. In this role you will have access to the latest technologies from around the world and help develop the next generation of batteries. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and have opportunity to develop capabilities across a range of materials processing, cell assembly and characterisation techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • You will gain a clear understanding of Dyson’s Energy Storage Requirements and apply your knowledge to optimise manufacturing processes for custom components in our cells, enabling the next generation of our products.
  • Use a combination of practical experience, creative thinking and continuous improvement methods, to define, specify, implement, optimise and exploit both novel and established manufacturing techniques that will enable prototype cells, on time and according to specific project objectives.
  • You will execute work supporting process understanding and robustness: from optimisation of existing methods, to evaluation, validation and optimisation of alternative methods, to defining critical process indicators and implementing inline quality controls, to continuous improvement and the introduction of novel techniques to further process understanding and effectiveness.
  • You'll work within a multidisciplinary team, including researchers and the manufacturing function, to contribute to the development of production processes, enabling transfer from materials research through scaled-up prototypes to manufacturing using automated and semi-automated pilot equipment.
  • Be flexible and resilient to change whilst responsible for delivering operational and/or technical tasks and processes across a range of core operational activities across the engineering lifecycle.

About you

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in a chemical, physical science or engineering discipline relevant to contemporary manufacturing.
  • Relevant industrial experience. For example, a background in the battery, electronics, aerospace, plastics, food, pharmaceutical industries.
  • Practical experience of manufacturing and/or process development.
  • Experience working in a quality-driven research or manufacturing environment, using quality and traceability systems and maintaining auditable activity and/or batch records.
  • Practical experience of validating and maintaining automated and semi-automated manufacturing equipment, including problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Practical experience of handling hazardous materials and use of protective equipment.
  • Good understanding of and compliance with health, safety and environmental standards within a chemical and/or hazmat environment.
  • Experience of developing and working to standard operating procedures (SOP) in a research or manufacturing environment.
  • Problem solving, analytical, attention to detail. An ability to identify problems and find solutions, providing examples of continuous improvement activity.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks relative to wider project needs.
  • Excellent team working and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and adaptability working across disciplines and cultures, in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information. Practised in the use of office applications and specialised tools for collecting, recording, processing and presenting data. Capable of working independently, drafting & executing regular plans, delivering objectives on time and in full.
