About the role

Prototyping Engineer is responsible to carry out Rig Building Operations to produce the rigs, prototype machine or prototype parts required for product development by follow project time plan.

The role is responsible to organize and manage builds for all product development projects and work closely with the Southeast Asia RDD teams. This is an engineering and coordination role which will involve: Prototyping rig build, assembly trouble shooting, build plans, resources arrangement, Dyson part ordering, stock parts, leak testing and safety testing of finished build. Other key objectives are:

  • To ensure involvement between the design team, operations, and quality people to start the prototyping rig build process work.

  • Proactively support the RDD and Engineering teams in building and improving the assembly process including set up and running the machines that supporting the prototyping rig build.

  • To ensure the quality of the rig are in good specification according to the assembly drawing and design intent.

  • Managing of machines and tools, including planning, and coordinating of preventive maintenance and calibration of machines with external service providers.

  • Evaluate and implement solutions to the problems related to rig quality and assembly method.

  • Periodically review the Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) and the Risk Assessment (RA) to ensure every each of the activity is safe.

  • Independent decision-making abilities demonstrate problem analysis and problem resolution skills to execute their own work to the highest standards and within the agreed lead times.

Primary role duties:

1. You are responsible for the In-House Prototyping Assembly Build Production (Rig Build) according to engineering requirement and to meet the project time plan.

  • Discuss with Project Managers or Design Managers about the required assembly details and rig / parts information.

  • Identified and get the assembly exploded view drawings with part number/description/quantity per indicated from Design Teams.

  • Manufacturing process flow charts (if not first-time rig build) – prepared by Assembly Leaders.

  • Timings: Project Manager or Design Manager to provide related info, i.e., assembly exploded view drawings, process flows, rig allocation plan, daily/weekly build output plan at least two weeks in advance of build, special item/equipment request at least four weeks in advance of rig build.

2. You are responsible for the Resources planning – Internal and external prototypes, manpower and standard parts (BOM List) ordering.

  • Arrangement and coordination planning for completed SLS parts, internal & external prototypes and other require tools or equipment. Also, headcount planning to support the build.

  • Rig build line layout, check and arrange, based on the information from Project Manager or Design Managers (Assembly exploded view drawings and process flow charts).

  • Location and sequencing: arrangement based on total rig quantity from Project Manager or Design Managers (rig allocation plan).

  • Check and monitor on internal and external prototyping order delivery timings.

3. You are responsible to identify, review, and monitor the Prototyping Assembly Build Production (Rig Build) KPI. Coordinate with CM and Test Department on resources sharing or utilizations.

  • The first rig, slow builds responsibility for SDE, DE, Quality and Manufacturing Engineer.

  • Target and Actual daily output monitoring board update per assembly / complete rig.

  • Build process constraint and issue findings, troubleshooting, conducting PFMEAs – Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis.

4. Work with minimum supervision and manage in-house resources efficiency and effectively.

5. Report daily tasks progress the completion or bottle neck that hold the progress.

6. Advanced project management skills, to manage, schedule, and track multiple prototype production and processes simultaneously to meet time plan.

7. Discuss with Project Managers or Design Managers about the required prototypes rigs/parts allocation.

8. Support strategic direction and specific projects.

Secondary/additional role duties:

  • Collect, keep track and analyses statistical data in relationship to assign projects to determine required standards and establish proposed quality improvements.

  • Develops and analyses statistical data in relationship to assign projects to determine required standards and establish proposed quality improvements.

  • Control and manage by periodically check stock with inventory system to determine amount available; anticipating needed stock; placing and expediting orders for stock; verifying receipt of stock.

  • Supervise and ensure all equipment in the rig building labs are in good condition and calibrated.

About you

Previous work experience:

  • Candidate must possess at least diploma or higher diploma in Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineering or any related discipline.

  • Minimum 2 - 5 years of working experiences in machining centre, manufacturing industry or any other manufacturing environment.

  • Working experience in advanced and prototype engineering will be added advantage.

  • Good hand and eye coordination required to perform detailed work.

  • Knowledge and experience in 3D CADCAM modelling, understanding mechanical drawings and measuring technique of engineering parameters will be an added advantage.

  • The ability to work safely around chemicals and equipment.

  • Understanding plastic / metal part design and process.

  • Able to cope with the physical demands of the job.

  • No allergies related to dust, solvents or paints.

  • Normal colour vision and good eye coordination to perform details work.

  • No chest complaints.

Specific technical qualifications/exposure:

  • Minimum 2 - 5 years of working experiences in Manufacturing or Prototyping (Preferable).

  • Expert in manufacturing production process. Independent ability to recognise opportunities to bring in new technology to improve the process and development.

  • In-depth knowledge in assembly – process, equipment, layout.

  • In depth knowledge and experience in troubleshooting failure rig.

  • Ability to gather information & problem solve with a systematic, logical approach. Expected to be able to solve problems effectively whilst managing stakeholders’ expectations. May take a leading role in discipline or cross-functional team during such resolution.

  • Ability to provide independent opinions/viewpoints to a problem with sound evidence, whilst developing ability to accept & assess multiple opinions/viewpoints.

  • Able to perform work in a productive, proficient manner with a positive attitude.
