Dyson’s interest in researching and developing energy storage technologies started more than a decade ago, when it became apparent that the full potential of our DDM motors were starting to be held back by commercially available batteries. Fast-forward to 2021, and we now have over 100 scientists and engineers working on battery R&D across our labs in the UK, US and Singapore.
With multiple generations of Dyson battery technologies ranging from early research through the industrialisation phase, Dyson are recruiting a wide range of roles across their UK and Singapore labs to accelerate progress. These roles include materials scientists, electrochemists, cell design engineers, cell test technicians, cell assembly technicians, mechanical design engineers, manufacturing process development engineers and manufacturing technologists. We are recruiting at all levels of seniority up to senior technical leadership roles.
About the role
You will join a growing team of chemists and chemical/material engineers in Dyson’s Strategy & Research Group. Your focus in this role will be on designing innovative and problem-solving cell components, as well as testing and developing techniques to characterise these components. You will work as part of a team in a very collaborative environment.
Apply your knowledge to design innovative cell components for state-of-art batteries and future technologies, with focus on electrolyte research.
Propose, develop and implement methods to characterise designed components
Work collaboratively within your team and across teams to quickly progress the projects
Understanding material and process limitations and solving problems to enable rapid implementation of new cell technologies
Hands-on laboratory work, with high attention to detail, and following Dyson Energy Storage standards
Data analysis and report to management on a weekly basis.
Manage high workload and deliver goals to support the team’s milestones
Write standard operation procedures, coshh and risk assessments, and support colleagues with technical and practical training.
Keep well informed on new developments in both academic research and industry.
Experience in a research environment focused on a deep understanding of Li-ion and future battery technologies
Experience with typical characterisation techniques such as FTIR, NMR, Raman, MS etc.
Experience with setting up new characterisation methodology for novel materials
PhD in Chemistry or equivalent in depth experience in chemistry
Experience with hands on a laboratory environment, with high attention to detail and precision. Also understanding, writing and following coshh and risk assessments, and following good lab practices
Highly developed problem solving and analytical skills; with ability to identify problems and find solutions quickly and effectively
Hardworking and fast learning in a fast-paced environment.
Able to organise and plan workload independently whilst always aligned with the team priorities. Being a team player and able to collaborate across teams
Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information, as well as keep good record of your work clearly to other team members.
