Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented and experienced Embedded Electronics Research Manager in the Technical Research Team, within Dyson’s Research, Design and Development (RDD) department; based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

Accountabilities

Reporting to the Head of Power and Embedded Electronics Research, you will lead a growing team of Embedded Electronics engineers. You will: • Lead and take technical responsibility for the embedded electronics team covering multiple projects • Work with the different product teams to gain an in depth product understanding, while using their expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative electronic systems and solutions • Ensure the team develops the concept, proves key technologies and demonstrates designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis prior to handover to the development teams • Support, review and critique: o Sensor selection including, but not limited to, gas, particulate, audio, infrared. o Research into new sensor technologies and the design of sensor conditioning circuitry o The selection of microcontroller and processor systems o The development of simulation tools and algorithms for sensor data processing, modelling and analysis o Thermal management design of electronic systems • Ensure designs can comply with relevant EMC/EMI standards and modifying design where needed • Assist in the personal development of the team and undertake appraisals of the team members. 
Whilst the Embedded Electronics team is responsible for supporting products at initial design stages, a key focus for any successful applicant will be to develop strategic supplier relationships, seek out and research early stage technology initiatives and look at ways of incorporating these technologies into future and new product opportunities. The Technology Leader role in Embedded Electronics requires a balance between technical ability and people management. A successful candidate should expect to be deeply involved in projects at a technical level and responsible for project delivery, as well as being able to manage direct reports.

Skills

Education and experience: • Minimum BEng/MEng degree in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry. 
Applicants should ideally have experience in the following areas: • Digital hardware design: o Excellent general knowledge of microcontrollers, preferably including ARM Cortex M series o Knowledge of a wide range of serial interfaces (e.g. I2C, SPI, UART, USB, I2S) o Knowledge of memory interfaces (e.g. NAND, NOR, DDR etc) is desirable o Experience of application processors is desirable o Experience of FPGA design desirable. 
• Analogue hardware design: o Experience of analogue amplification and signal conditioning circuitry o Design of OP-AMP stages such as differential amplifiers, integrators etc. • Software o Experience of C/C++ programming for embedded systems o Use of Matlab or Python for data acquisition and analysis o Experience of programming on Linux or Android operating systems running on application level processors desirable o Digital signal processing experience desirable o Experience of VHDL or Verilog desirable. 
Other key technical experience: • Design Tools: o Schematic capture using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics or other main stream tools o Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix and LTspice o Design calculation tools such as Mathcad and Microsoft Excel.  • Design Techniques: o Circuit simulation and design tolerance analysis o Robust design including FMEA techniques o Good quality engineering process understanding and appreciation o Design for high volume manufacture o PCB layout – size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance and thermal design. • Lab experience o Experience of working in a laboratory environment desirable o For gas sensing, handling of gas bottles and experience dealing with dangerous gases in a lab environment is desirable.
