About us

We are a diverse team of creative engineers and researchers in the Technical Research group in Dyson. We work across floorcare, haircare, environmental control, and new category projects, and develop novel technologies for our products.

We research into a wide range of electronic areas, including sensor systems, embedded microprocessor systems and embedded software algorithms, often taking concepts to a form-fit prototype level.  We strive to bring the latest technologies to our products, working closely with New Product Innovation and wider research teams right from the start of product creation.

About the role

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented and experienced Technical Research Manager specialising in optical sensor systems to join the Electronic Systems Research Team, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Responsibilities

  • Technical solution owner for one or more electronics projects covering electronics hardware and embedded software within a Dyson product or technology project, with a particular focus on sensor systems. As a manager, you will lead projects with experts across the wider electronics and software team.

  • You will work on projects from their inception, alongside the New Product Innovation teams, aiming to deliver the best solution and bringing new ideas to the design.  As part of the role, there are opportunities to work in both existing and new product categories.

  • Managing a team of engineers to deliver electronics projects to our development teams, ensuring team philosophies and working practices are applied to a project.

  • People management of your team including goal setting and performance reviews.

  • Working with different sub teams within Technical Research, New Product Innovation, other research groups and development teams to gain an in-depth product understanding, while using your expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative systems and solutions and solve complex system level problems.

  • Demonstrate designs are robust and viable for use in product through laboratory testing and driving the team to develop simulations to optimise designs.

  • Managing hardware and embedded software design review activities.

  • Ensure requirements and architecture details are documented by the team.

  • Managing technical risks in a project through FMEAs.

  • Produce and present project documentation which include concept specifications, requirements and specification documentation, risk registers and design guides when needed.

  • Research into new and emerging technologies, through meeting suppliers, reading papers and patents.

  • Identify emerging IP and ensure inventions are submitted to the IP team.

  • Ensuring the team generates suitable test specifications to ensure product safety, reliability, and robustness. This includes the development of test environments including simulation, emulation and hardware/test equipment interactions.

About you

  • BEng/MEng degree (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering, physics or other relevant discipline, or a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.

  • Candidates with previous optical sensing experience, such as driving illumination sources, working with optical sensors (camera systems, photodetectors), optics, and knowledge of associated analogue front ends and processing are encouraged to apply.

  • Previous experience of leading electronic hardware engineers and/or software engineers and ability to leverage their potential based on an inclusive approach to people management.

  • Experience of electronic hardware design, including device selection and PCB design, as well as simulation using mainstream tools.

  • Ability to drive optical simulation tools, such as Zemax or LightTools, is desirable.

  • Experience of working in consumer electronics desirable.

  • Experience of managing embedded software engineers or writing embedded software is desirable.
