About the role
The Thermo Dynamics Research Manager will work within the Environmental Care (EC) Research team, reporting to the Head of EC Research in the UK. The EC research team works on current Dyson product categories of fans, purifiers, heaters and humidifiers as well as working to create entirely new product ranges. The candidate will apply their skills and experience to invent and develop new technologies that enhance the company’s technical advantage in future products.
The successful candidate will drive research projects from initial conception, through to full integration into new product prototypes. As a Research Manager, the successful candidate will be expected to line manage a small team of experts in Thermodynamics. Mentoring and technically guiding team members will be a part of the role.
Lead and deliver product-focused technology projects to the Dyson range plan.
Generate intellectual property for Dyson.
Manage a small team of 3 - 4 experts in Thermodynamics, with plan to grow the team in 2023
Work with senior leaders in Dyson Research to propose and agree research strategy and direction.
Collaborate with team members to generate innovative concepts for new technologies.
Conduct joint research with external institutes and universities toward future technology and capability development.
Analyse test results, summarise findings and communicate these to the highest levels at Dyson
Liaise with development teams to ensure effective transfer of technology into future product range.
Experience of successfully developing technology from concept to deployment.
Strong people focus with track record of facilitating personal development and growth within your team
Expertise in thermodynamics, preferably including thermal fluids behaviour, thermal comfort, phase change materials and refrigeration systems.
Superb communication and presentation skills. Able to translate and communicate technical information to project/research teams and senior leaders at Dyson.
Qualified in Physics or a related discipline to graduate level or equivalent industrial experience.
Good analytical and problem-solving ability, capable of logically assessing technologies using a variety of methods.
Persistent nature and an inquisitive attitude.
Good organisational skills - able to plan-ahead and to prioritise tasks and co-ordinate with the work of others.
Have an understanding of core engineering test procedures and equipment. Able to specify experimental programmes and effectively analyse results, summarise findings and make recommendations.
