Dyson offers an opportunity for a Senior Aerodynamics Manager in the Floor Care Research team, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

The team is responsible for creating and developing new technology for the products in the Floor Care category. We conduct our research investigations and technology development through a mixture of low to high fidelity simulation and single and multi-phase airflow experiments.

About the role

The Senior Manager will work within the Floor Care Research team, reporting to the Head of Research, to apply their skills and experience to invent and develop technologies that enhance the company’s technical advantage in future products.

We work very closely with the New Product Innovation (NPI) team and deliver technologies into new products during the research phase. A successful candidate will be leading a team of approximately ten mechanical and simulation engineers and aerodynamicists. The team will work to generate new ideas and technologies to enable specific product features, as well as researching into future technologies.

Key Responsibilities

•    Lead and inspire scientists, designers, and research engineers to provide scientific insight into Dyson’s research challenges.

•    Own the technology roadmap and strategy for your area at Dyson.

•    Oversee the simulation, design and build, and experimental programmes to evaluate concepts and technologies.

•    Effectively manage an engaged team, taking responsibility for all related operational tasks such as goal setting, coaching and performance evaluation.

•    Produce reports and presentations summarising progress against team and project goals, effectively and engagingly presenting complex technical information and analysis to senior and Executive level management.

•    Collaborate with academic and industrial partners to leverage externally available expertise, managing the relationship.

•    Generation of novel intellectual property.

About you

B.Eng./M.Eng. degree in Mechanical, or Aerodynamics-based Engineering (or equivalent), or other relevant discipline and a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.

You should be able to demonstrate an ability to research, innovate, as well as being a key contributor to strengthening the culture of innovation within the team and wider department.

Desirable Technical Knowledge:

•    Experience in some of the following areas: Experimental aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, experimental DoE techniques, Matlab/Simulink or equivalent, virtual optimisation or machine learning techniques.

•    Experience using Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench or other equivalent design tools.

•    Have a good understanding of how to conduct a scientific investigation. Able to safely specify experimental and/or simulation programmes and effectively analyse results for statistical significance, summarise findings and make recommendations.

•    Effective communicator: appropriate, concise, and accurate information in written and verbal format.

•    Able to adapt or generate imaginative and innovative ideas in line with core Dyson values.

•    Comfortable at multi-tasking and planning effectively when working with a variety of project teams.

•    Good analytical ability and attention to detail.

•    Excellent team working skills and a desire to inspire others within the team.

•    Have a high level of awareness of team activity and display foresight and clear thinking in the planning of what action to take next.
