About Us

Our product development teams take radical new ideas and develop them into reality. They explore the limits of our technology and optimise it through relentless experimenting, testing and iterating. Our New Product Innovation team is our ideas centre. It identifies new problems and develops concepts to solve them with disruptive and ground-breaking technology. Our New Product Development team takes these concepts and works closely with our global engineering and production teams to turn them into machines that are ready to launch. It then develops new ways to test and evaluate performance, to accurately position our technology against our competition. The teams collaborate with Research specialists, downstream RDD teams along with a range of satellite teams to form complete concept proposals and business cases that can be presented to executive stakeholders, including

About the role

Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for producing innovative concepts and detailed designs that push the limits of technology.  We need practical, hands on problem solvers who can own design areas and drive new product innovation. Working with a design manager and small team you will be pioneering new floorcare technologies and overseeing the transfer of them to NPD. Projects are fast paced and ever adapting through regular design reviews with senior management, so you need to be able to adapt quickly.  Your time will be split between optimising products using simulation tools such as FEA and hands on building/testing in the labs so ability in these disciplines is key.

Accountabilities

  • Ability to generate imaginative and innovative solutions.
  • Mechanically validating concepts using simulation in addition to a design, build, test approach to demonstrate plausibility and feasibility.
  • Own medium size/complex functional areas and manage the design and development through project milestones.
  • Provide clear and concise communication to key stakeholders to ensure alignment across the project team and wider business.
  • Ability to work across a number of different projects and platforms simultaneously.
  • Understanding of manufacturing techniques and a “design-for-manufacture” mentality to deliver high performance and reliable mechanical system solutions.
  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others.

About you

  • BEng/MEng/MSc degree (2:1 minimum) in Mechanical or Structural Engineering or equivalent with a demonstrable level of industrial experience.
  • Solid competency in CAD (NX desirable), experience with Finite element analysis (Ansys desirable).
  • Idea generation – a creative problem solver who is intellectually sharp.
  • Experience of structural optimisation and material science.
  • Understanding of other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or electronics.
  • Good hands on building and test capability with understanding of suitable rapid prototyping techniques and workshop skills to quickly progress early concepts.
  • Experience of delivering robust design solutions on time, to specification and within cost and budget constraints.
  • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of mechanisms and an awareness of the application of electrical principles and electronics
  • Willingness to champion great ideas, highly motivated self-starter with a persistent nature.
  • Ability to simplify complex mechanical problems into mathematical models and perform preliminary performance predictions, analyses and provide design recommendations.
  • Ability to devise lab based measurement techniques and test methods to validate early concepts.
