About us

Within Dyson Research we define what is next in technology and look to continually push the boundaries of what is possible. We are at the very start of the new product ideas chain, working to develop the technologies that enable future products.

We are a diverse team of creative engineers and researchers in the Technical Research group in Dyson who work across floorcare, haircare, environmental control, and new category projects, and develop novel technologies for our products.  We research into a wide range of electronic areas, including sensor systems, embedded microprocessor systems and embedded software algorithms, often taking concepts to a form-fit prototype level.  We strive to bring the latest technologies to our products, working closely with New Product Innovation and wider research teams right from the start of product creation.

About the role

We have a unique opportunity for a Senior Electronic Systems Engineer to join the Electronic Systems Research Team, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.  Candidates with experience in the IoT domain, such as connectivity, embedded systems, edge data processing and sensor systems are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Design of electronic hardware including connectivity, embedded processor systems, analogue front-end circuitry, and a wide range of sensors.  Part selection, Schematic design, PCB layout, PCBA bring-up and commissioning are all part of the role.

  • Simulation of electronic hardware and verification of simulations though laboratory testing.

  • Data collection from real devices and sensors, pre-processing, validation of machine learning models, training the model, optimization for embedded systems, deploying trained models back to embedded devices and testing performance.

  • Assist and support colleagues on defining the right sensing and data acquisition strategies. Advise on data collection and what hardware is needed.

  • Propose signal feature extraction algorithms, state machines and prototype implementation.

  • Working on projects from their inception, alongside the New Product Innovation teams, aiming to deliver the best solution and bringing new ideas to the design.  As part of the role, there are opportunities to work in both existing and new product categories.

  • Working with different sub teams within Technical Research, New Product Innovation, other research groups and development teams to gain an in-depth product understanding, while using your knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative systems and solutions and solve complex system level problems.

  • Demonstrate designs are robust and viable for use in product through laboratory testing and driving the team to develop simulations to optimise designs.

  • Managing technical risks in a project through FMEAs.

  • Produce and present project documentation which include concept specifications, requirements and specification documentation, risk registers and design guides when needed.

  • Research into new and emerging technologies, through meeting suppliers, reading papers and patents

Desirable experience

  • Experience of electronic hardware design, including device selection and PCB design, as well as simulation using mainstream tools.

  • Software/hardware development and algorithm design.

  • Real-time data processing.

  • Experience in a higher-level language (Python, Matlab) and/or C++.

  • Knowledge of Atlassian tools, including Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket.

  • Experience with embedded and host-based applied machine learning.
