About the role

The Senior Electronics Engineer will join the Imaging Systems group complementing the Floor-care Robotics Hardware Integration team as a part of Dyson’s SEA Hardware Electronics organisation. The candidate will bring together deep, specialist knowledge and skillsets to lead the development of advanced imaging systems for use across a wide range of future-generation Dyson Floor-care products. The Imaging Systems group is responsible for specifying design requirements, delivering form-fit prototypes, verifying and validating the design and addressing mass-production challenges of complex imaging systems including but not limited to fisheye cameras, visible/IR illumination systems, high-resolution Time-of-Flight (ToF) cameras, Structured Light Stereoscopic cameras and imaging solutions involving the combination of such systems.

  • Evaluate imaging systems options to deliver the Dyson project vision and key features.
  • Propose imaging systems solutions to Dyson project stakeholders.
  • Source, shortlist and select key components for the agreed imaging systems solution(s).
  • Devise Statement of Work (SoW) and Technical Specifications documents to outline the imaging systems’ hardware, software, and calibration requirements.
  • Collaborate with Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) to deliver form-fit prototypes.
  • Verify design proposals provided by ODM through simulations
  • Design investigative tests and develop analytical software scripts for the characterisation and verification of prototypes.
  • Propose and bring up the relevant test equipment to enable in-house characterisation of prototypes.
  • Collaborate with Dyson’s Systems and Product Verification teams to co-develop test methods for the verification and validation of the system and product-level requirements.
  • Provide technical advice to the engineering design teams to resolve system integration challenges.
  • Provide support to the manufacturing teams to achieve high yield rates for the mass production of imaging systems.
  • Evaluate the performance of emerging imaging systems technologies by conducting investigative tests on demo kits provided by third parties and share findings with Dyson’s project stakeholders.

About you

  • A degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics)
  • At least 5 years of experience working on the design, implementation, and verification of imaging systems such as camera modules, ToF sensors/cameras, LEDs, Lasers and LCD displays.
  • Sound understanding of the theories and working principles of modern photography technologies.
  • Good understanding of the design consideration factors of key components in imaging systems and how the components interact to produce the desired performance.
  • Experience performing image quality testing using industry-standard test charts to determine the MTF, colour accuracy, chromatic aberration, image distortion, SNR, relative illumination, optical centre, field of view (FOV) and depth of field of camera modules.
  • Understanding of the working principles and technical limitations of imaging systems capable of depth measurements such as stereoscopic camera systems, TOF sensors/cameras and LIDAR systems.
  • Experience using optical design tools such as LightTools and Code V to produce simulations for the verification of optical designs.
  • Experience in specifying the requirements of End-of-Line calibration equipment and qualifying production testers.
  • Experience with embedded microcontroller-based systems such as Raspberry Pi and nVidia Jetson would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in at least one of the major schematic capture and layout packages such as Altium Designer and Mentor Graphics.
  • Proficiency in basic understanding and manipulation of 2D/3D CAD using one of the major CAD software tools such as Siemens NX and SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, Python and LabVIEW would be a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work independently and effectively as a team.
  • A highly motivated person with good communication skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Independent, integrity and self-driven with a strong focus on results.
  • Possess a strong command of written and spoken English.
