At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We’re creative, collaborative, practical and enthusiastic, but most of all we’re hugely passionate about what we do. We are looking for individuals who wish to invent, design and develop leading products for the global market. By working in our world class Research Design and Development department, these individuals have the opportunity to work alongside other leading technical specialists and highly motivated creative people, to develop products which fulfil our ambition of being truly different and better than our competitors.
Our team adds electronics (hardware, firmware and software) to prototypes to make them come alive, to understand the technology, use cases, requirements and aim to de-risk the progression from prototype to product.
We support all areas of new product innovation – robot, environmental care, lighting, floor care etc. We parachute into these teams to solve problems, so excellent people skills are required. We are the consultants and experts brought in to solve problems and make it work, fast.
About the Role
Typically, we use microcontrollers, sensors and actuators to explore new ideas and concepts dreamt up by the Dyson NPI (New Product Innovation) teams.
Our team covers all aspects of electronics, from simulation, prototype hardware, PCB design, prototype build, firmware (mostly in C) through to GUI’s in Python or Qt.
You will be assigned to a project where you will work with the product team to design and build prototype electronics.
Work with the different product teams to gain an in depth product understanding, whilst using their expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative electronic systems and solutions.
Develop the concept, debug it, prove key technologies and demonstrate designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis prior to handover to the development teams.
Document all phases of the design, use source control and progress tracking tools.
Constant quick learning and flexibility are needed in the fast paced, ever changing world of Dyson new product innovation.
BEng/MEng degree (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.
Wide breadth of knowledge and experience.
Prototyping and research.
Dealing with vendors of new sensors, semiconductors and other technology.
As the role is developing and working with new inventions and prototypes very strong debugging skills are required.
Good communication skills (written and oral).
Able to supervise others (e.g. Dyson Institute of Engineering Technology students).
Good analytical ability and attention to detail.
Multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often high-pressure, competitive environment in an organised manner.
Microcontrollers (e.g. SAMD21, STM32).
Sensors and interfacing.
I2C, SPI, UART, USB, CAN, Modbus.
Displays, stepper motors, brushless motors.
Firmware development in C ( gcc, IAR, Keil environments).
Very strong hardware and software debugging skills.
Use of oscilloscopes, Logic analysers.
Thro hole and SMD prototype construction.
Schematic capture and PCB design (e.g. Altium, KiCAD).
Analogue electronics, Power electronics.
System design and architecture.
Understanding of a wide area from mechanics, sensor physics, electrical safety to Thermal, EMC and UI design.
Robust design, FMEA, Design for manufacture, Safety.
Atlassian tools (confluence, Jira, Stash/Git).
Data analysis or simulation tools (e.g. Matlab, simetrix, Ansys, LTSpice).
