About the Role

The Senior Legal Counsel is responsible for leading the legal function in Dyson ANZ and supporting the ANZ businesses in achieving their strategic plans. You will be responsible for providing a wide range of legal, risk and compliance advice to the ANZ Leadership Team and their teams. You may also be required to support the broader Group Legal and APAC Legal teams on regional and global projects. 

This role is part of the broader APAC Legal team at Dyson, which is led by the General Counsel of APAC (based in Singapore) and comprises of other market lawyers based in Japan, Korea and Singapore.

Main responsibilities include but not limited to:-

  • Provide high quality, timely and commercially focused legal services to the ANZ Leadership Team and broader business

  • Provide advice and support on a wide range of matters including commercial law, competition and consumer law, leasing, privacy, risks, compliance and company secretary activities 

  • Build collaborative and productive working relationships with key stakeholders

  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of contracts that fall within Legal’s scope for review, particularly contracts with key retail and business partners, leases for retail stores and key operational sites, high value supplier contracts, and contracts that contain intellectual property and privacy risks

  • Review a wide range of marketing claims for Dyson products, including reviewing substantiation documentation, and advising Group Legal and the business on key risks

  • Manage insurance claims, disputes and competitor challenges that fall within market lawyer remit  

  • Identify and escalate compliance risks and implement processes to mitigate such risks  

  • Manage and close out legal requests promptly

  • Provide legal and compliance training to the business

  • Work collaboratively with the APAC Legal team and broader Group Legal team and assisting with regional and global projects as needed

  • Regularly monitor legal updates (cases, legislation, media releases from regulators etc) and ensure relevant stakeholders are updated on all relevant matters

  • Manage panel law firms (where necessary)

About You

To be successful in this role, you will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to deliver high quality outcomes quickly. You will be able to stand firm with the business when enforcing/implementing new ways of working and enjoy collaborating with stakeholders and the broader team.

Previous skills & experience

  • Solid experience having worked in a private practice and in-house at a senior level   

  • Experience in a wide range of matters including commercial law, competition and consumer law, leasing, privacy, risk, compliance, disputes, insurance claims, competitor challenges, corporate governance, and company secretary activities 

  • Strong understanding of the ACCC and Commerce Commission’s stance on misleading and deceptive advertising, consumer guarantees and competition law is required.

  • Understanding of the TGA and health/medical claims is highly desirable

  • Expertise in contract drafting and negotiation, particularly of customer contracts with key retail partners, leases for retail stores and key operational sites, high value supplier contracts, and contracts that contain intellectual property and privacy risks

  • Expertise in reviewing marketing claims and substantiation data and advising on key risks

  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic legal advice and providing workable solutions, whilst managing risk and working with the business to achieve high outcomes 

  • Demonstrated ability to advise, influence and collaborate with senior stakeholders
