Dyson has state-of-the-art R&D laboratory facilities to support the development and testing of novel battery designs. Continued expansion of our activities has created an exciting opportunity within the team for an individual who is keen to get hands on with the development of the next generation of batteries.

Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a motivated and dynamic Senior Engineer in the Energy Storage team within Dyson’s Research, Design and Development (RDD) department; based at the Malmesbury Campus, Wiltshire, U.K.

About the role

You will join a team of electrochemists, mechanical and electronic engineers in Dyson’s Strategy and Research Group. Your focus will be on the development of novel cell designs to meet Dyson’s growing Energy Storage requirements. In this role you will have access to the latest technologies from around the world and develop the next generation of batteries. You will:

  • Gain a clear understanding of Dyson’s Energy storage requirements and apply your knowledge to develop custom cells, enabling the next generation of our products.

  • Work as part of a team to design cells and define packaging for current and future generations of cell chemistry.

  • Work with design, prototyping and applications teams to understand impacts and opportunities from mechanical design considerations on cell components.

  • Use a combination of practical experience, modelling and theoretical knowledge to optimise cell design, with a clear understanding of the impact of mechanical design on failure modes and safety performance of cells and packs.

  • Implement electrical, mechanical and thermal testing methodologies towards selection of cell components and manufacturing processes.

About you

Education and experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters level degree in a physical science or engineering discipline relevant to cell research and development.

  • Track record in the development of energy storage technology with an understanding of the critical factors that influence, performance, safety and lifetime.

  • Understanding of battery materials critical to mechanical design and packaging, including key trends and developments.

  • Experience in mechanical/electrical/thermal characterisation of constituent cell components and the design and implementation of characterisation methodologies for novel technologies.

  • Understanding of cell failure modes related to mechanical components.

  • Experience of working with scientists and engineers from different backgrounds, including stakeholder management.

  • Knowledge of CAD and Teamcenter.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience in developing cell packaging (such as pouch, cylindrical and prismatic) and integration into battery packs.

  • Knowledge of electrochemical techniques relevant to cell characterisation.

  • Experience of scaling cell design and/or production methods from small scale to pilot prototype.

  • Ability to model mechanical performance from fundamental material properties.
