Dyson is a global technology enterprise. We solve the problems others choose to ignore, with surprising new inventions that defy convention and simply work better. We’re growing fast and our ambition is huge - more categories, more locations and more people.
Our product development teams take radical new ideas and develop them into reality. They explore the limits of our technology and optimise it through relentless experimenting, testing and iterating. Our New Product Innovation team is our ideas centre. It identifies new problems and develops concepts to solve them with disruptive and ground-breaking technology. Our New Product Development team takes these concepts and works closely with our global engineering and production teams to turn them into machines that are ready to launch. It then develops new ways to test and evaluate performance, to accurately position our technology against our competition.
The teams collaborate with Research specialists, downstream RDD teams along with a range of satellite teams to form complete concept proposals and business cases that can be presented to executive stakeholders, including
About the role
Our Mechanical/Drives Engineers are responsible for producing innovative concepts and detailed designs that push the limits of technology. We need practical, hands on problem solvers who can own design areas and drive new product innovation. Working with a design manager and small team you will be pioneering new floorcare technologies and overseeing the transfer of them to NPD. Projects are fast paced and ever adapting through regular design reviews with senior management, so you need to be able to adapt quickly. Your time will be split between design work and hands on building/testing in the labs so appreciation for both is key. ability in these disciplines is key.
Ability to generate imaginative and innovative ideas and use a design, build, test approach to progress concepts to show plausibility and feasibility of designs.
Own medium size/complex functional areas and manage the design and development through project milestones.
Provide clear and concise communication to key stakeholders to ensure alignment across the project team and wider business.
Ability to work across a number of different projects and platforms simultaneously.
Understanding of manufacturing techniques and a “design-for-manufacture” mentality to deliver high performance and reliable mechanical system solutions.
Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others.
BEng/MEng/MSc degree (2:1 minimum) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with a demonstrable level of industrial experience
Solid competency in CAD (NX desirable), experience with gear design/analysis software and Finite element analysis (Ansys desirable)
Understanding of other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or electronics.
Good hands on building and test capability with understanding of suitable rapid prototyping techniques and workshop skills to quickly progress early concepts.
Good understanding and experience of gearbox and drive train design.
Ability to design components and systems for an electromechanical environment.
Willingness to champion great ideas, highly motivated self-starter.
Ability to simplify complex mechanical problems into mathematical models and perform preliminary performance predictions, analyses and provide design recommendations.
Ability to devise lab based measurement techniques and test methods to validate early concepts.
