We are looking for Product Design Engineers to join our multi-disciplined team to work on our next generation of Haircare products.   At Dyson we develop new technologies to dry and style hair, solving problems that others ignore, and develop unique and innovative products that answer a real user need. Our Haircare engineering team has been the driving force behind our success with recent products such as Supersonic & Airwrap, joining the team will give you the opportunity to be a significant part of the next generation of products. 

We work as a collaborative team with disciplines focused on end style performance, user experience, structural integration, airflow, heat and power delivery systems. We are solving problems for people globally and we design for a diverse range of user needs and hair types. As part of the UI/UX team you will be delivering new product features that offer unique benefits to our wide range of users, defining and detailing how we want our products to behaviour and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with new technologies to create a 5 star user experience

Joining the team in a Senior role will give you the responsibility to drive the direction of our projects, provide technical guidance to our employees, mentor the personal development and career opportunities of team members, and to help define our development processes for new technology areas.

As part of the senior team you will also be involved in coordinating and delivering initiatives to ensure Dyson continues to be an innovative, appealing and rewarding place to build a career for all members of the haircare category.

About the role

  • Day to day engagement with a team of Design Engineers including technical guidance and mentoring.

  • Implement great design and solve engineering problems to make products that meet all performance and functional criteria within demanding project timescales.

  • Communicate between multiple teams within RDD and Global Operations to ensure effective and timely delivery of work packages.

  • Work with research teams to integrate and develop new technology research into the final design.

  • Management of specifications, requirements definition and rationalisation, test methods development and validation discussion guides.

  • Oversee user trials and user studies to validate the product requirements.

  • Challenge and develop Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve design quality. 

  • Ownership of the full structural and/or system design and testing of all products within your remit. 

  • Prepare documents and progress overview for a regular design reviews with the Design Manager, Engineering Manager & Global Head of Engineering – justify design detail and collaborate with other specialists.

About you

  • Ideally a Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Hands-on experience designing manufactured products and practical knowledge of 3D CAD.

  • Practical knowledge of working with mixed materials (plastic parts, metal fabrication, textiles construction and development and new materials specs).

  • Sound knowledge of physical principles.

  • A strong understanding of practical and methodical design development through prototyping, testing and evaluation of results.

  • Knowledge and understanding of plastic injection moulding, tooling and other manufacturing methods.

  • A passion for engineering; able to demonstrate how your ideas have made a difference.

  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others.

  • Excellent communication, problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Knowledge or understanding of UI / UX design and implementation.

  • Experience working closely with electronics and electronic systems.

  • Basic coding skills and knowledge of system engineering.
