About the role 

Dyson has invested in a novel ceramic technology, and we need to exploit it for a range of future product opportunities. This requires a Principal Engineer specialising in ceramics with established technical leadership in novel material development and extensive experience in delivering innovation ideas to final products. You will be working closely with a number of multidiscipline teams and solving our most complex and important engineering problems, making high value, high impact technical decisions and recommendations.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of novel material science programmes with significant business impact.

  • Drive research programmes through technology readiness levels, motivate teams to deliver.

  • Work autonomously and proactively to identify risk within projects and influence cross- functional teams to use best practice to resolve challenges where no precedent exists.

  • Effectively and clearly communicate risks and progress of the resolution of technical challenges to senior stakeholders.

  • Cleary highlight complexity, maturity, and delivery risks in projects during technical design / research reviews.

  • Mentor and guide individuals, proactively disseminating their knowledge and assisting in the technical development of the function and future Principal Engineers.

  • Challenge, reinvent and develop best practice within the function and across RDD.  

About you

  • PhD or equivalent in material science, preferably specialising in ceramics, semiconductor and device materials, or similar. Experience with ceramic fabrication techniques such as milling, sintering and different green body shaping techniques would be desirable.

  • Over 10 years’ experience in material development, process improvement and delivery of commercial products.  Demonstrated track record of fundamental understanding to investigate material properties and behaviours.

  • Technical and personal credibility to work effectively with cross functional teams.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability using a variety of methodologies. 

  • Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Be able to motivate, influence and mentor others.

  • Proactively collaborate with stakeholders of all levels and across cross-functional teams.
