About the role
The successful candidate will join a growing research team tasked with exploring new opportunities through application of their scientific and engineering expertise. The team’s principal objective is to develop fundamental understanding from both scientific and consumer perspectives, and conduct research that yields novel innovations and the subsequent development of disruptive and highly effective products.
The available role requires a Senior Research Engineer/Scientist to spearhead our investigations into the design, development, and application of ultrasound in consumer products. They should have prior experience in the theoretical and practical design of ultrasound technologies, with demonstrable capability to apply their knowledge to new and unknown applications.
While the team has access to the wide array of expertise present at Dyson, covering all scientific disciplines, the applicant will be solely responsible for the investigation and development of their project. It is critical that the successful candidate have a very proactive attitude and can individually progress projects according to broad briefs, while also working as part of a multi-discipline team to help identify and realise technical opportunities. The research and design of investigations, the practical build of experimental rigs, conducting controlled experiments with appropriate measurements, and performing thorough analysis of results will form the core responsibilities of this position.
Though the role is based in Malmesbury, UK, Dyson has a research function that spans the globe - to be successful the candidate will need to work closely with a range of teams and disciplines located in a variety of time zones. Maintaining effective working relationships independent of physical location will be essential and so strong communication and collaborative skills are required.
Senior researcher leading the investigation and development of technical innovations relating to the application of ultrasound on household products.
Responsible for operating and maintaining specialized ultrasound generation and characterisation equipment.
Identify potential research areas based on scientific insight.
Generation of technical hypotheses aligned with team objectives and based on theoretical and experimental insight.
Identify and propose new equipment and external collaborations to support critical research areas.
Produce high quality reports tailored for a variety of product development stakeholders.
Progress projects using the Dyson research milestone process: Conduct and analyse investigations, document and report findings, communicate to key stakeholders, and handover to downstream teams.
Present insights and results to James Dyson and the Exec. team when required.
Degree qualified in relevant scientific discipline (e.g. High Frequency Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or any related field)
PhD is an advantage but not strictly necessary
>3 years post-graduate working experience either in academia, industry, or industry-facing e.g. collaborations
Fundamental understanding of ultrasonic phenomena, including wave generation, wave propagation, and wave modes.
Appreciation of cavitation, both internal and external.
Knowledge and experience of ultrasonic field characterisation techniques.
Experience with specifying, designing, and conducting experiments into ultrasonic phenomena – including transducer customisation.
Appreciation of biological health and safety risks associated with the use and application of ultrasound.
Experience of consumer-oriented product design and development is highly desirable.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Good communication and presentation skills. Able to translate and communicate complex technical ideas to wider team, senior managers, and directors when required.
