About the role
Dyson offers a unique opportunity for an experienced individual to join the Battery Pack Research Team as the Senior Research Manager. The role is for a senior technical leader who wishes to invent, design and develop industry leading high-performance battery packs for high volume production for a wide range of applications. The team is part of the Technical Research Team that comprise of Electronics, Energy Storage and Motors & Power Systems Teams, based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K. The team are pioneering methods of integrating Dyson’s own state-of-the-art cell technology, as well as delivering improvements to the battery packs with commercial cells.

Core Responsibilities
The role is an opportunity to work alongside other technical senior leaders and significantly contribute to the creation of enabling technologies for a variety of next generation Dyson products and fulfil our ambition of being truly authentic, different, better and faster than the competition.
The successful candidate will report to Motors and Power Systems Research Director and directly lead a multi-disciplinary, highly motivated and diverse team of engineers working closely with electronics and energy storage research teams. Core responsibilities include:
Stretch the boundaries of power and energy density whilst ensuring safety, robustness and reliability in a variety of applications
Meet target specifications such as cost (part and manufacturing), size, mass and performance within the planned timeline of each research project – ability to optimise these concurrently
Lead, plan and manage resources across multiple highly ambitious and complex projects that run simultaneously
Understand the overall product concept and contribute significantly to the design of the product with expert knowledge of the latest technologies / methods in the industry
Assess, establish and manage supplier relationships with technical and commercial negotiations, maintaining confidence in BOM and assembly costs throughout a project
Lead the team to generate innovative novel solutions with strong & high value IP
Identify skills or knowledge gaps within the team and lead the recruitment activities as required
Coach and mentor team members
Create and manage associated technology roadmaps

About you
Ideally you will hold a BEng/MEng degree from a relevant engineering degree programme with a demonstrable level of industrial experience
Demonstrable technical expertise with breadth and depth in developing Li-Ion battery packs and their integration into complete Power Systems
Mechanical Engineering
Thermal design
Materials (fire retardants, intumescent, light weighting, etc.)
Automated Manufacturing / Assembly Methods
Testing and validation of battery packs
Strong working knowledge of Design for Manufacturing to deliver low cost, high volume, high performance and reliable engineering solutions
Experience in a wide range of multi-disciplinary 1D to 3D simulation techniques, platforms, and ability to use these to drive designs. Be able to correctly judge the need and place for quick hand calculations vs. complex 3D simulations.
Robust understanding of the role of concept specifications, requirements capture, DFMEAs and DVP&R’s in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment
Demonstrable familiarity with
Welding techniques
Materials science
GD&T and dimensional engineering
Siemens NX, Ansys Workbench and Siemens Teamcenter
Manufacturing technologies for battery packs
