Technical Designer - Retail

The Retail and Events team oversees the design development and rollout of retail across the Americas. We are searching for a Technical Designer to bring retail environments to life. This role will partner with concept designer, production managers, and project managers, to develop and document retail fixtures systems, custom fixtures, tactical displays, and POP.

About the role:

• Development Design : Evolve initial design concepts into tangible retail furniture for production. Able to prepare design intent drawings, complete production drawings as needed, and redline shop drawings by others. Ensure technical documentation adheres to the Dyson design process, facilitate value engineering, ensure solutions are commercially viable and promote efficiency wherever possible throughout the process.

• Standards : Ensure the details follow and integrate Dyson global retail design standards, while concurrently ensuring solutions comply with Americas standards and requirements (regional Code, retailer expectations, ADA, UL, sustainability/lean). Driving the necessary differences while maintaining consistency.

• Partner Collaboratively : Work closely with both local and global teams to assist concept exploration, offering technical guidance, ensuring design validation and adhering to a coherent design vision. Able to influence others and deliver the most appropriate solution given the tasks at hand. Comfortable with input and collaborating with global partners. Solution oriented and positive.

• Vendor Liaison : Progress designs with vendors.. High familiarity with vendor retail development processes and ability to deliver projects to completion.

• Prototype Review : Undertake comprehensive prototype reviews with our global and local manufacturing vendors. Track design progression through internal reviews across multi-functional internal teams and senior stakeholders for approval and handover into production.

• Travel : Regular travel, up to 20% or as needed, dependent on projects and product launches. Travel expected for market-based or global prototype reviews or installations. Travel between other Americas regions (US, Canada, and Mexico).

About you:

• 5 Years’ experience in mechanical or technical design with an emphasis in developing retail fixtures
• Experience in 3D modelling skills in Solidworks is required.
• Knowledge of 3DS Max preferred.
• Experience collaborating and directing retail fixture vendors
• Experience coordinating with designer, production managers, project managers and marketing stakeholders
• Experience collaborating with production managers to evaluate cost reduction and future proofing retail displays
• Experience collaborating with 3D and 2D concept designers
• Experience in material specification including CMF documentation and BOMs
• Experience in folded metal construction, millwork, plastics, and injection molded parts.
• Experience developing electrical and wiring diagrams for retail fixtures
• Experience presenting development concepts to internal and external audiences
• Experience reviewing and approving prototypes
• Solid understanding of UL guidelines for retail
• Solid understanding of accessible design
• Solid understanding of health and safety as it relates to retail environments
• Solid understanding of Microsoft Office suite
• Ability to work in the Chicago office of Dyson
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally
• Bachelor of science in mechanical engineering degree or equivalent
