About the role

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional professional engineer to join our Prototype, Verification and Test organisation (PVT) as an electrical engineer specialising in controls, instrumentation and automation. In PVT's Test Systems Design team you will play an integral part in designing and maintaining various industrial-grade special-purpose machinery and automated test equipment, facilitating fast development of world-leading and innovative commercial products. You will be responsible for all hardware aspects of design and specification of electrical and control content of machinery and equipment that is compliant to all applicable regulations. You will ensure good equipment design occurs from an early stage by ensuring design risk assessments to EN 12100 are done promptly and involve the relevant technical experts to ensure that the solutions that you deliver meet Dyson's high safety standards and customer requirements.

The successful candidate will have a sound theoretical understanding of power distribution, low voltage circuits, safety circuits, sensors, and actuators, drives and VFDs, servo and stepper motors, PLCs, DAQ, SCADA, HMI, historian, bus-communication and integration of these complex sub-systems, ideally with work experience in one of the following areas:

• Electrical control panel design

• Control and data acquisition systems

• Special-purpose machinery design

• Electro-mechanical design

Key responsibilities:

• Deliver electrical design work to projects, working alongside other technical functions within the team to ensure the correct solution is developed.

• Work with the PVT team and external providers to deliver safe, efficient, and innovative test systems.

• Work to make sure that all work is documented and contribute to the delivery of technical documentation that is required for compliance.

• Use your expertise to innovate solutions to complex problems.

• Specify, design and help to build electrical systems for test equipment.

• Excellent communication skills working to strengthen connections between members of the global PVT and NPI test teams to ensure test rigs are designed with compliance in mind.

• Work with other members of the test team to tweak processes in order to get a good balance between compliance and rapid development.

• Fulfil any new activities that fall broadly into the role.

• Work with minimum supervision and influence others in the test development function to support the development of a high-performance team.

About you

• Degree qualified in a relevant engineering, maths or science discipline.

• At least 1+ year experience in Eplan or similar electrical design package.

• Experience in producing electrical designs that comply to EN 60204, EN 13489.

• Experience designing and building bespoke and compliant machinery.

• Sound understanding of electrical theory.

• Experience in electrical commissioning and fault finding.

• Good understanding of standard test procedures and equipment

• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and provide clear advice and guidance to a diverse audience

• Demonstrable experience of working independently and as part of a team

• Highly organised, with a consistent yet pragmatic approach to process implementation

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to work independently

• Experience in authoring technical documentation.

• Can do attitude, with a proactive and solutions orientated approach.

• Resourceful, energetic and motivated

Experience of the following regulations would be desirable but not essential:

• The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)

• The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008

• The Low Voltage Directive

• Electricity at work regulations

Experience in software development for industrial hardware, or PLC programming, is also desirable.
