About the role
We are on the lookout for a Principal Android Engineer to join our mobile app team at Dyson. Communication, collaboration and a desire to improve are second nature to you, and you live and breathe good engineering practices. Your experience gives you a deep understanding of the delivery of robust and testable code, balanced against the need to deliver efficiently.
What you’ll be doing
As part of a global team of App Principal Engineers, own and communicate the architectural vision for the MyDyson app.
Contribute to the definition and design of systems in which the MyDyson app is a part, in collaboration with cloud, embedded software and IT architects.
Support app development teams on complex features and initiatives, and represent the app team from a technical perspective in conversations with business stakeholders.
Share your knowledge and experience with the junior members of the app team, to develop the skills and competencies within the team, including mentoring junior engineers.
Proactively identify technical risks within projects and influencing teams in their resolution.
Identify and drive the deployment of new technologies and tools to help continually improve standards and quality across the wider team
About you
10+ years of experience working on and scaling global Android mobile applications
You thrive on solving tough technical challenges and setting the technical direction for product teams. You’re hands-on—a coder at heart—but you also see the bigger picture and shape the roadmap.
You’re comfortable working across disciplines. Whether it’s mentoring engineers, aligning with product managers, or presenting ideas to leadership, you bring people together to move projects forward.
You have strong knowledge of modern app architectures (MVVM, MVI, Clean Architecture) and design patterns and have extensive experience with modern Android development with Kotlin, Compose and Jetpack libraries.
You’re a collaborative person that understands and believes in the Agile principles, and how they can enable empowered app teams to deliver robust and scalable software solutions
You’ve contributed quality code to highly rated mobile apps that have positively impacted a large community of users
You are motivated by the challenge of solving real-world problems
Our technology - Android app
The MyDyson app uses a modular architecture built using the MVVM pattern. Over 75% of our codebase is written in Kotlin, with an ongoing effort to migrate the remaining Java code.
Core technologies:
Jetpack libraries: Including Compose for our UI and design system, Room for handling persistence, and WorkManager for managing background tasks.
Cloud & Product Communication: Retrofit for cloud API calls. AWS IoT SDK for MQTT comms with our connected products. Gson for JSON parsing.
Dependency Injection: Dagger is used throughout the app.
Async & Reactive: RxJava, Kotlin coroutines, and Flow for managing event streams and asynchronous operations.
Testing: We rely on JUnit, Robolectric, and Mockito for unit tests. Espresso and Kakao cover UI automation.
