Engineering my career, just like a prototype

Taking on the unfamiliar unlocked unexpected growth

There’s no fixed formula for developing a brand-new technology—especially one that hasn’t been made at scale before. That’s what makes my work at Dyson so rewarding. It’s an environment that constantly evolves, where being adaptable and hands-on is just as important as being analytical and precise.

I started at Dyson in 2019 and I’m currently a Lead Process Development Engineer. I’m responsible for developing and scaling up the production processes of electrode materials for our next-generation battery technology. The role has grown with me—what was once heavily lab-based has shifted into one that involves strategic planning, data analysis, and directing technical direction. I’ve also had the chance to explore new frontiers including a two-year secondment in Research, Design and Development(RDD) Beauty, where I worked on new prototyping processes and characterisation techniques. It was fast-paced, high-pressure, and pushed me to think differently. That experience helped shape my ability to lead independent research.

The most exciting challenges often come with tight deadlines. One of my proudest moments was helping the RDD Beauty team deliver working prototypes in time for a key milestone. We had to adapt processes and methods quickly, and I was able to demonstrate a new approach that made sample manufacturing possible within a very short time frame. Seeing those prototypes come to life made the hard work worth it.

Throughout my time here, I’ve worked across multiple project generations and technologies, each with its own complexities. I’ve gained deep expertise and knowledge in new areas thanks to the diverse, multidisciplinary teams I’ve been lucky to collaborate with. That cross-functional exposure has helped me sharpen my skills in data processing, analysis and visualisation, especially through tools like MATLAB. Dyson also encourages this kind of growth, providing access to online learning and communities that organise training seminars.

Stay flexible and open to new opportunities. Some of the most valuable skills I’ve developed came from taking on something unfamiliar. That’s how you stretch, and that’s how you grow.
