Technology Systems Engineer, Philippines

From gas turbine engines to Hyperdymium motors

With a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, I naturally expected to land a job in the aviation industry. However, a role at Dyson caught my attention. Learning about Dyson's Hyperdymium motors and comparing them to the gas turbine engines I studied extensively in college piqued my curiosity. The rest, as they say, is history!

Starting as a Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer in 2022, I eventually found my true passion in Fluid Dynamics. The journey to my current role as a Technology Systems Engineer was transformative – through the projects I worked on, Dyson amplified my curiosity and interest in engineering, pushing me to explore and pursue what I love.

A typical day at work involves testing prototypes, analysing their thermal and airflow characteristics, conducting simulations, and processing a lot of data. I thoroughly enjoy the collaborative spirit at Dyson, as the insights from my team are invaluable in steering design improvements. The most satisfying part of my role is implementing changes to address problems during various development stages. Understanding the problem, finding the root cause, rationalising failures, and devising solutions is a fulfilling process. Seeing the impact of my work on the final product is incredibly rewarding.

The iterative process of designing a product requires resilience, persistence, and a genuine interest in innovation. At Dyson, challenges are seen as hurdles to overcome, and this mindset drives us to deliver high-performing, quality products. For example, many overlook how altitude affects machine performance. Cities situated at higher altitudes have different ambient air densities, and we tackled this by developing innovative and advanced systems within the product to maintain motor performance. Another issue we addressed was the safety of our haircare products. My team and I worked diligently to ensure that the heat from our machines remains comfortable and safe for users, upholding our commitment to quality and user satisfaction.
