Building confidence, creating change

I joined Dyson in September 2023 after completing a degree in Product Design. My studies focused on user-centred design, and Dyson’s engineering ethos was a recurring example during my lectures. Having a Dyson research engineer as a guest lecturer fuelled my desire to work here, and I was inspired by the company’s commitment to research and relentless iteration.

A typical day for me starts in the prototyping labs, collecting parts I’ve 3D-printed and diving into hands-on testing. Team check-ins follow, where we align on projects, upcoming reviews, and any challenges. My work involves everything from concept exploration to feasibility engineering, often collaborating with the Strategy and Industrial Design teams. I adjust what I do each day to fit my project work, and that’s what keeps it exciting.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a graduate in New Product Innovation is the opportunity to rotate through different categories and departments.  The rotations have been invaluable for broadening my technical knowledge.

Starting at Dyson wasn’t without challenges. While my degree gave me a solid foundation, there were gaps in my technical skills that I needed to bridge quickly. I learned to ask questions fearlessly, absorb knowledge from my mentors, and trust my ability to contribute ideas confidently.

One standout project was leading a brief eight months into my role. It was entirely open-ended – requiring research, strategy, and concept development. Presenting my vision to senior leaders pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me the importance of trusting my instincts and taking initiative.

Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my journey. Working in small teams meant I could easily seek advice and guidance. A mentor encouraged me to balance learning and teaching—advice that’s encouraged me to support others while continuing to grow myself.
